Following doubts about us actually getting off the beach, due to the forecasts of the previous two or there days, we did, launching into flat calm seas with very clear water, the sight of hundreds of Mullet and Bass feeding just off the beach certainly put us all in good spirits. On board Sambe we had Steve Harries, Nigel Derbe, Roger Carrow, Colin Tew and Phil Cocker (fresh from his week of angling in the Torbay Festival), on board Orca we had Andy Daniels, Mike Davis, Clive Baddick and Stewart Leach.

A brief shower of rain was encountered on the way out to the grounds but for the majority f the trip we were in relatively fine weather and flat seas, even with some breaks in the cloud to allow the Sun to be seen occasionally. The rain staying off until the last 40 minutes of the day.

The day for both boats was one of mixed fortunes, Orca spending a lot of the time at drift on the slow tide whilst Sambe was at anchor for the majority of the day, both boats moving about four of five times from one ground to another.

The headline of the day must be that between the boats we boated 20 different species, with both having Black Bream, Conger, Dogfish, Grey Gurnard, Mackerel, Pollack, Poor Cod, Pouting, Ballen Wrasse & Cuckoo Wrasse (10 species) Sambe in addition had the following not boated by Orca – Plaice, Tope, Red Mullet and Goldsinny Wrasse giving them a boat total of 14 species, Orca boated in addition to the 10  the following – Bass, Red Gurnard, Tub Gurnard, Blonde Ray, Small Eyed Ray and Scad giving a boat total of 16 species, all showing what a great variety of fish we have in the bay – some more numerous and common than others.

Clive Baddick brought to the boat a superb Grey Gurnard of 1lbs and 4oz, Mike Davis a sizeable Bass of 6lbs, whilst Nigel ever the consummate angler brought in a Tope, Plaice and a rare Red Mullet, on the day he with 11 species and 535 points was the overall winner.

Sambe with 5 anglers gave up a total of 2095 points ( Nigel 535 – 11 species, Phil 495 – 7 species, Steve 485 – 9 species, Roger 290 – 6 species and Colin 285 – 7 species) an average of 418 per angler, whilst Orca produced a total of 1645 (Andy 505 – 10 species, Mike 445 – 9 species, Clive 410 – 8 species, Stewart 285 – 5 species) an average of 411 per angler, so all fairly tight when averages are compared, using that if Orca had had another average angler on board making 5 in total the overall score would have been 2056 so yet again showing just how comparable the two groups are on the day.

All agreed to it having been a good day out on the water and as we always say it was better than being ashore looking out.

Well done one and all.
