BDSAA - Club History

First known in 1963 as “Beer Fishing Club”, it was then run by the local fishermen Fred Newton and Douglas Orley, it never really took off and funds were left in the bank.

Then in 1965 it was started up again under the name of:
Beer & District Sea Angling Association”
With the headquarters at the Anchor Hotel, Beer, it then moved to "The British Legion" room for two or three years before moving to the Beer Social Club, where it remained until the Social Club closed in late 2016.

Some of the First Committee were:
President J.H. Maundrill
Vice President Edwin Heathercote-Bingham
Chairman C. Morris
Vice Chairman R. Hill
Treasurer C. Jones
Secretary D. Snell

Committee Members
B. Lee, V. Bartlett, J. Bartlett, T. Smith, T. Larcombe and D. Trott.

In the early days the club had a very strong membership from the Wellington area.
Boat competitions were held on Saturday afternoons between 2.00pm and 7.00pm with 3 or 4 boats in every competition.

Shore competitions were held on Saturday evenings for 4 or 5 years.

The club started off with 40 members and today we are still running with approximately the same number.
